Reviving the Past: Amir Cherni's Award-Winning 3D Visualization

Cherni's 'Ruelle' Captures the Aura of Old Tunisian Downtown

Amir Cherni, a renowned 3D artist, has breathed life into the past with his award-winning 3D visualization project, 'Ruelle'. This project, which has been awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, is a testament to Cherni's exceptional skills and innovative approach. 'Ruelle' is more than a 3D scene; it's a journey back in time, a vivid exploration of an old Tunisian alley, complete with decayed surfaces and dirty textures.

Cherni's inspiration for 'Ruelle' came from a challenging desire to reproduce something that had never been done in the 3D visualization industry. He collected hard-to-reproduce references and embarked on a journey out of his comfort zone. The result is a 3D scene that not only captures the mood and aura of old Tunisian downtown but also pushes the boundaries of what's possible in 3D visualization.

'Ruelle' stands out for its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to authenticity. All textures and models were made manually from scratch, using real-life scanned surfaces. The randomness and decayed aspect of the majority of the 3D objects presented a significant challenge, but Cherni rose to the occasion, creating a scene that's as close to the real thing as possible.

The project was realized using 3Ds Max to model all the scene's objects, which were textured using 3D scans of real-life surfaces. Corona renderer was the main render engine used to light up the whole geometry and render the 3D still images. Each image was rendered at 4K, with an average render time of 6 hours for each image.

3D visualization refers to the process where graphical content is created using 3D software. It's a technology that's gained significant popularity over recent years and is now an essential method for producing high-quality digital content. Cherni used 3D visualization to reproduce the old alley in the old medina of Tunis, showcasing the technology's potential and versatility.

The project took almost a month to complete, from gathering the references to the finished renders. The most challenging aspect was the texturing, which required Cherni to reproduce and paint manually all the texture variations based on real-life references. Despite the challenges, Cherni's dedication and skill shone through, resulting in a project that's not only technically impressive but also emotionally engaging.

'Ruelle' is a testament to the power of 3D visualization and the potential it holds for bringing the past to life. It's a project that pushes the boundaries of what's possible in the industry and showcases Cherni's exceptional skills and innovative approach. With 'Ruelle', Cherni has not only created a stunning 3D scene but also paved the way for future projects that dare to explore the uncharted territories of 3D visualization.
